The dream Arabia of the Saint-Simonians
L’Arabie rêvée des Saint-Simoniens
Résumé
The story of the Saint-Simonians in Egypt between 1833 and 1838 is now well known and documented. However, the role played by certain Saint-Simonians in geographical knowledge of the Hedjaz, the province of western Arabia that is home to the two holy cities of Mecca and Medina, remains largely unknown to this day. This contribution aims to shed light on the destiny of two French travellers, Maurice Tamisier and Jean Prax, who both played a pioneering role in relations between France and Arabia. The former was the first French traveller to leave a detailed account of his stay in the Hedjaz in 1834, while the latter was, as far as we know, the first Frenchman to enter Mecca in September 1835.
