Development and validation of a social robot anthropomorphism scale (SRA) in a french sample

Résumé

A new anthropomorphism scale was developed suitable for social robots in a French sample based on an integrative approach of anthropomorphism (i.e., the attribution of human characteristics to a nonhuman agent). Most of the existing scales are in English and their psychometric properties are not systematically reported. The Social Robot Anthropomorphism (SRA) scale consists of 31 items, developed from the relevant literature within the following five dimensions: appearance, behavior, cognition, emotion, and morality. First, we examined through confirmatory factor analyses (N = 450). Second, we evaluated the internal consistency of the scale and its relationships with theoretically related constructs such as technology acceptability, and negative attitudes towards robots. Finally, we evaluated the temporal stability of the SRA scale (N = 56). The final scale consists of 20 items. Results showed that the five-factor model provided satisfactory fit indices. Internal consistency was satisfactory, and test-retest showed the SRA scale had a high degree of stability. Correlations were found with technology acceptability and negative attitudes towards social robots providing preliminary support for convergent validity. Thus, the five-dimensional SRA scale demonstrates good psychometric properties and assesses anthropomorphism by considering the attribution of both physical and mental characteristics to robots.
